EMS Track Results!

HHS students have volunteered their time a few mornings before school throughout the year dedicated to bringing awareness around seatbelt safety and limiting distracted driving. They have stood at each school entrance in bright yellow vests with a clipboard marking the number of students/staff that are wearing/not wearing their seatbelt. They have also kept track of whether the driver appears to be distracted by their cell phone, a passenger, etc. Special thanks to JD Clary for helping facilitate this SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) program helping our school community be conscious about keeping themselves and others safe while on the road!

What a way to start the day! Crossing guard duty. Rain or shine, hot or cold, our staff are out there every day making sure our kids get to and from school safely. Your kindness and dedication don’t go unnoticed. Thanks for what you do!

During March Madness, 6th-grade ELA students participated in a Poetry Bracket competition, listening, reading, and voting on various poems in head-to-head matchups. After much debate and close calls, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert W. Service was voted the class favorite, edging out Shel Silverstein’s “Sick”, which earned second place.
In honor of National Poetry Month, students were treated to a special visit on Monday, April 14, from Victoria Jelks, a junior at Horton High School. Victoria is a two-time Kansas State Champion for Poetry Out Loud. She has competed at the National Poetry Out Loud in Washington, D.C. twice, placing ninth at the National Level. She shared her passion for poetry, performed selections, and inspired the 6th graders with her journey and advice about the power of spoken word.
