EMS and HHS students attended an assembly with former Haskell Indian Nations University assistant basketball coach and speaker, Elwood Ott, on Wednesday, October 11. The assembly was sponsored by the Johnson O’Malley Program (JOM). Elwood Ott is an enrolled tribal member of the Otoe-Missouria Nation. Mr. Ott attended Haskell Indian Nation University in Lawrence, KS, where he received a bachelor’s degree in American Indian Studies. He brings a robust set of skills, knowledge, and passion in advocating for Native youth. In particular, he strives to encourage and support the health and wellness of Native youth through healthy eating, nutritional education and physical fitness. Mr. Ott shared his story of perseverance and the importance that education plays in a young person’s life. He encouraged students to realize that they are part of a community and that all students should play a role in helping and receiving help when needed.
