During March Madness, 6th-grade ELA students participated in a Poetry Bracket competition, listening, reading, and voting on various poems in head-to-head matchups. After much debate and close calls, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert W. Service was voted the class favorite, edging out Shel Silverstein’s “Sick”, which earned second place.
In honor of National Poetry Month, students were treated to a special visit on Monday, April 14, from Victoria Jelks, a junior at Horton High School. Victoria is a two-time Kansas State Champion for Poetry Out Loud. She has competed at the National Poetry Out Loud in Washington, D.C. twice, placing ninth at the National Level.
