As you may have noticed, our JOM students throughout the district are wearing orange shirts today. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is officially recognized on September 30th, which was last Saturday. This day acknowledges that residential schools are a part of our history. The use of an orange shirt as a symbol was inspired by the accounts of Phyllis Jack Webstad, whose personal clothing—including a new orange shirt—was taken from her during her first day of residential schooling, and never returned. The orange shirt is thus used as a symbol of the forced assimilation of Indigenous children that the residential school system enforced. Wearing an orange shirt is a national movement to recognize the experience of over 150,000 indigenous children who were forcibly taken to Indian residential boarding schools, to remember & honor who those children were, and to show a collective commitment to ensure that every child truly does matter.
