Everest Chargers, NEK League Tournament Champions
Going into the final week of the season as the 3 seed, the road ahead looked difficult! That did not stop the Chargers from believing they could win it all, and their persistence paid off as they clinched the NEK League Title.
The girls opened the tournament against sixth-seeded Jefferson County North. This was a team that Everest had defeated twice, and felt confident heading into the matchup. The team played well, won by 10, and advanced to the semifinals against Oskaloosa. The Chargers had not beaten the Bears this season in two attempts, and the previous matchup ended in a lopsided victory for Oskaloosa. This was the perfect recipe for the Chargers to sneak up on the 2 seed, and our girls pulled off an upset with a 24-19 win over a very good opponent.
One more day of practice proved beneficial, as the Chargers prepared to battle the Cobras of Jackson Heights, another team that recently handed them a loss. The girls battled and earned another upset victory, which will surely leave great memories of their middle school season. Winning by a 12 point margin in the NEK Championship game put the proverbial bow on the season that ended right before the holidays!
Throughout the season, the girls learned about handling adversity, sticking together, and getting better every day. These lessons proved valuable in the league tournament, and will continue to be great life lessons! Way to Go Chargers! We are all proud of you!

Congratulations to Trey Lockwood! 🏈
