Cheer and Dance Lock-in

Last week on Friday night after the dance, the Cheer and Dance team had a lock-in at the high school.
The objective was to get more team bonding in since we have a whole season that goes through the school year. Our goals that we made were to be at practice, no drama, and to work hard and do a good job.
From other people’s eyes it may look like we don’t do a lot but we do more than stand there and smile. We watched the movie Grease, and had a potluck dinner for supper, and then we had some of the girls and coach and chaperones bring different games to play. And soon enough the night went from 12 to 4 in the morning.
At seven we were all awakened by our lovely coach, and we got to eat pancakes and then most of us went home and slept and then went to work or shopped. It was a very fun night.
Horton Elementary Picture Day will be Sept. 1st. Students will be bringing home Inter-State Picture Forms on Friday August 27th. Parents will also have the option of ordering on-line. All information will be included in the forms the students bring home with them on Friday.

Horton High School Fall Sports Review

2020 was a rough year for all of us. But with sports starting back up, it’s bound to be a lot better than last year. Through all the difficulties however, one sports team stands out the most, football.
Throughout the entire summer, our boys in blue have been putting in hard work to become better. And with the upcoming season and jamboree, they are looking forward to having a better season than the past four.
One of the team’s leaders, Senior Trey Lockwood, had this to say, “We are working hard and continue to get better every practice, there’s multiple guys competing for multiple positions.” Trey then had some comments on the upcoming season and jamboree, “We are a few steps ahead of where we have been the previous years and that's due to attitudes and numbers. We got a great chance to compete and play ball coming up. Coaches put us in a great position to win. All we gotta do is execute.”
One of the biggest challenges for the team has been the offensive and defensive Line. And with great size and strength this year, it’s bound to get interesting. Offensive and defensive lineman, senior Jon Boller, had this to say, “The O line and D line have improved from where we started. We have guys competing for the same spot and everyone seems aggressive and wants to start on Friday nights.”
Now time for a sport that has everyone on their heels, cross country! The cross country team has performed excellently throughout the past years. And throughout the summer until now and into the future, our runners have been putting in hard labor to give the competition a run for their money. Senior Trevor Ottman had this to say about their hard work and dedication, “We’ve been going decently hard compared to what we’ve done in the past. I think we’re on the right track.”
Let’s wish our runners a great year and hope they perform even better than last year!
Finally there is one more team that has had their ups and downs throughout the past years, volleyball. Our very own Lady Chargers have put in so much time into becoming better and raising competition. With our 2021 seniors behind us now, some younger students have big shoes to fill coming into the 21-22 season.
Sophomore and varsity athlete, Amaya Boller, had this to say about work ethic and the upcoming season, “We have been doing good if we put our minds to what we need to do. My thoughts heading into the season are to always be positive no matter what and always work as a team.”
Another volleyball athlete, sophomore Isabelle Gaskell had this to say about their practices, “I think that as a team, we have been doing a lot better in our drills. We’ve got a lot of expertise coming from our coaches and since they have been coaches in the past, they pretty much know the ins and outs of being a high school volleyball coach.” She then went on to say, “ The coaches know the best drills to make us better.”
The 2021-2022 high school fall sports season is going to be a huge one. Lets all come together and support our Horton Charger athletes! Best of luck to everyone!!!

Summer Weights

For the past decade, one of our own coaches, Nick Dowell, has been running a weightlifting program in the mornings during the summertime. Many people attended this program with their friends, siblings, and classmates, but some just did it to get better.
I interviewed Amaya Boller, Nick Dowell, Trey Lockwood, and Drew Weddington about their experiences. Amaya said that she always woke up at the last possible second, because she lives across the street and because she likes sleeping better. Her favorite day to attend was Fridays, or Heavy Day, because they lift more than you would on “Crazy Eights” day. Her favorite part was when she got home so she could take a shower and go back to bed.
Senior Trey Lockwood was up at 5:25 everyday due to the fact he had to pick up younger lifters so they could get involved. He stated that, “My favorite day was Wednesday every week because it was nice to be in the weight room and help teach technique and work ethic to the underclassmen and middle school.”
Lockwood continued, “My favorite part of weights is the feeling of accomplishing something good every day no matter what happens the rest of the day. My favorite lift is hang clean because I feel it translates to the field the best. With it being my senior year I had a very big all-in mentality. Last round of weights. I’ve been doing it since seventh grade so it was a bitter-sweet moment. I tried my best to lead and set an example for the younger student athletes.”

EMS Volleyball will play on Monday, August 30, at Winchester. They will play at 4:30 (vs. St. Benedicts) and 5:30 (vs. JCN). A and B teams will play at the same time. Go Chargers!

This week in USD 430...
HS Sports Drink Scrimmage/Intro this Friday, August 27, at the HS Gym beginning at 6:30. Please bring a six pack of sports drink or powdered sports drink as your admission. There will be a VB Scrimmage followed by introductions of the Fall Sports Teams, Cheerleaders and Dance. Come out and support the Chargers!
Each summer, USD 430 hires students to work with our custodial crew to take care of all our summer needs. These students help scrub and wax the floors, clean classrooms, paint inside and outside our buildings, and many other tasks.
This year we had an exceptional group of students. A huge thanks to Avery Wischropp, Austin Hoffman, and Jonathan Boller IV.
We also received an additional shoutout for Austin, Jon, and our newest custodian Ryan Willis! They did an excellent job cleaning the school vans - inside and out!
At the end of the summer all three of our student workers returned to school. Avery is attending Kansas State University, Austin is enrolled in Washburn, and Jon is in his senior year at HHS.
EMS volleyball practice will be dismissed at 535 pm for the remainder of the year. The bus will leave from Everest at 545 pm.
The EMS staff would like to thank these lovely students that served as mentors for our 5th and 7th graders on August 17.
A huge thanks to the Brown County Sheriff's department! They held a school supplies drive and were able to donate several boxes of materials to USD 430. The supplies will be divided among the buildings for teacher and student use!

Tonight is EMS back to school night from 6-7 pm.
5th and 7th grade first day of school is on Tuesday, August 17.
All students come to school on Wednesday, August 18.
