Starting with the 2026 postseason, the Kansas State High School Activities Association has implemented a new state basketball tournament structure designed to enhance competition and fan engagement. The traditional 8‑team final sites are being reimagined so that the quarterfinal round is played across multiple neutral/college venues around the state, with matchups set by proximity to the higher seed to allow more family and community attendance. Games involving teams more than 250 miles apart may be shifted to central neutral venues. After quarterfinals (March 10–11, 2026), teams that win advance to state semifinals and finals, which are now grouped by class at four consolidated championship sites instead of having a single site per classification.
For 2026, the semifinal and championship site assignments include:
1A Division I at United Wireless Arena (Dodge City)
2A and 1A Division II at White Auditorium (Emporia)
3A and 4A at Hutchinson Sports Arena (Hutchinson)
5A and 6A at Koch Arena (Wichita)
In 2027, assignments shift slightly, with 2A joining 4A at Bramlage Coliseum (Manhattan) and 1A divisions together at Tony’s Pizza Events Center (Salina).
Sub‑State Qualification – Class 2A
In addition to the state format shift, Class 2A (as with classes like 3A and 1A) now uses a regional/sub‑state qualifying system to determine who advances into the state quarterfinal bracket. Teams are divided into four geographic regions, and each region is further seeded into two sub‑state brackets (A and B) with seeds arranged in an 1‑4‑5‑8‑9‑12‑13‑16 and 2‑3‑6‑7‑10‑11‑14‑15 format. The winner of each sub‑state tournament advances to the state tournament bracket—so four teams from 2A will qualify for the state quarterfinal round under the new structure.
This refined format blends statewide excitement with local postseason play, aiming to reduce travel burdens, concentrate championship competition, and celebrate more state titles in shared, high‑visibility venues.
