The KAY club hosted the first annual “Community Tree”. This was a community service project that the club put together. Each high school club was in charge of bringing an “ornament” for the tree. The ornaments were donation items that the club would later take to the women’s shelter in Atchison, Kansas. This project lasted for a little over a week and over four hundred items were donated. On December 15, 2016 club members loaded the items into a car and took them to Atchison. When we arrived at the house, the Assistant Director, Sherri Done was very helpful. She helped unload and bring the donations into the house. Done told us all about how she got started and about their current status today. The Dove Inc. house in Atchison has been running for two years now and only has three workers. These women do not get paid and sometimes have to pay the bills in order to keep the women’s shelter going. Dove, Inc. started twenty-seven years ago with just a hotline. The founder soon realized the need was much greater than she anticipated and bought a safe house for the women. Dove, Inc. is now up to three locations in the North East Kansas area.
KAY club is very thankful for being able to donate to such a good cause. We became much more aware of the need that these women are in. Talking with Sherri Done was an eye opener and we cannot wait to continue our donations with Dove, Inc. in Atchison, Kansas. KAY Club President, Callie Hoobler
