The KAY organization is a leadership building and character building program directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

This nationally acclaimed organization provides students opportunities to assume their citizenship responsibilities that enrich their personalities through well organized programs. The Horton High School KAY program emphasizes four areas of service: school, community, nation, and world.  Teachers can have a huge influence on their students. Horton High School KAY Chapter members feel that it is important they take the time to recognize those teachers and the members of the teaching staff at Horton High School in how hard they work to academically influence and enhance student learning.

For January Teacher of the Month, KAY member students chose a staff members who brings her best every day, Mrs. Kimmi.

Ms. Kimmi is the Teacher of the Month. She is the best math teacher on the north side of the building. Ms. Kimmi teaches Algebra I, Algebra II, and Financial Literacy to the students of Horton High School. She always has a positive spirit and strives to share her love of math with her students. Ms. Kimmi went to school here in Horton and grew up in the Everest area. She spent a lot of her time with her cousins. She has 4 brothers and 1 sister.
Ms. Kimmi enjoys walking, reading, and playing Pokemon Go in her spare time. She has 2 sons and 1 daughter. Her favorite food is chocolate. Ms. Kimmi’s favorite color is purple… but not because of K-State. She enjoys watching any sport her kids participate in, even math relays! Her favorite sport teams (after the Horton Chargers) are the Jayhawks and the Pitt State Gorillas. Ms. Kimmis favorite type of math is factoring!
Her favorite thing about Horton High School is all the people, she loves the staff and students she gets to see everyday. Her best advice to give is that you should “Enjoy every minute but don’t ever believe that these are the best years of your life… because that’s a lie.” and “Fake it till you feel it!” We are so thankful to have Ms. Kimmi here with us at the highschool. She truly cares about each and every one of her student’s success. She is always willing to answer your questions but also helps her students to learn how to help themselves!. We are very lucky to have great teachers like Ms. Kimmi!

Horton High School KAY Members Attend 2017 Regional KAY Conference
By Tatum Lockwood, KAY President
Nine members of the Horton High School KAY Club attended the Area 1 KAY Regional Conference on Monday, October 30th at the Turner School District. The following student delegates who participated in the Regional 1 Conference are: Tatum Lockwood, Kailea Smith, Grete Olsen, Elanie Vanderweide, Josie Santos, Sarah Hutfles, Tabitha Banks, Ally Bottom, Lorena Torres, and Horton KAY Sponsor, Margaret Krogmann.

The Regional Area One KAY conference took place at Kansas City Turner High School. Our club officers learned what other clubs are doing to help in their community and how we can apply that to our own community. We also learned more about central leadership skills. We learned it’s OK to stay safe but it’s better to “Set Sail and LEAD-YER-SHIP.” The conference offered opportunities in collaborating with other student leaders from neighboring clubs who shared successes and challenges as well as an exchange of ideas. This year’s conference inspired Horton High School delegates to return to our own club to challenge their local members in striving to reach higher goals.
We found out about fun upcoming activities that take place in the KAY community.  As a club we have received the Red Award for the 2016-2017 school year, Horton High School KAY members are excited to set high goals in working towards the next higher awards of Blue or Gold Awards for the 2017-2018 school year.
Additionally, KAY club members are excited to participate in the July 2018 Summer Camp at the Rock Springs facility outside of Junction City, KS.

October Teacher of the Month
Travis Torkelson

by:  Kailea Smith and Aspen Brayli Oaks

For October’s Teacher of the Month, our students chose a teacher who tries to bring his best everyday. This teacher has devoted so much time to making our school better. He will be the new high school boys basketball coach. The October teacher of the month is Mr. Torkelson. Mr. Torkelson is the government teacher at the high school. As much as he loves to teach, he loves spending time with his family more than anything, which include: his wife, Krissy Torkelson, and his three daughters Mia, Berkleigh, and Laila. One of his favorite things to do on the weekends are go to K-State games and tailgate with family and friends. Mr. Torkelson’s “live by” quote is, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Mr. Torkelson is a great role model for students and this is why Mr. Torkelson is more than deserving of the honor of October Teacher of the Month. Thank you for  all you do for our school, Mr. Torkelson!
