40th Annual Hiawatha Invitational Tournament.
In the first round, the Lady Chargers (2) outlasted the Lady Bulldogs of Marysville (7) and their full court pressure. The game opened with a quick burst of offense as the Lady Chargers outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 after the first quarter. The ensuing quarters were filled with high intensity full court defense that temporarily got the Lady Chargers out of their comfort zone until the Bulldogs were able to take the lead. With a large surge late in the fourth quarter led by Daspin Bruning’s eleven points in the fourth quarter the Lady Chargers took the lead for good. The Lady Chargers were led by Bruning (19) and Lockwood (15).
In the second round, the Lady Chargers faced Brown County foe, Hiawatha. Horton’s ability to work the ball inside and to the high post kept them in the game until late, as Hiawatha hit free throws to keep the game out of reach to win 33-43. The Lady Chargers were led by Bruning (15) and Blackburn (8).
In the third place game, the Lady Chargers were met by the fast paced Bears of St. Mary’s. The Lady Chargers were met with a full court press and high intensity man to man defense. The Bears were able to force too many turnovers early that led to a lead the Chargers would never come back from, falling 30-51. The Lady Chargers were led by Bruning (15).
